Olympic Day

By Gabriel H. and Ethan G.
Olympic Day is my favorite day of the year. In late May or early June is when we usually have Olympic Day this year it is on May 29th. In Olympic Day you do many activities with your class. When you hear the bullhorn you go to the next activity, when all the activities are done Olympic Day is over and you go back to your class. Some of the activities are parachute games, sack races, and many more. Every kid looks forward to Olympic Day because they know they will have a blast.

Student Staff Basketball Game

By Ethan G. and Gabriel H.
Every year the students play the staff in the student staff basketball. Most of the time the staff wins. This is how it works, each group of 5 players play for about 6 minutes. Then after 8 teams have played we have our winner. This year the staff won 65-61.
It was close and very exciting. This year’s students give luck to next year’s students and we hope you win.

March Madness

By Gabriel H. and Ethan G.

In March there is a huge college basketball tournament called March Madness. Last year Kansas won it all in overtime against Memphis. In the tournament there are 4 groups. Each group has a number 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on until the 16th seed. You play teams in your group until one team in each group is left. Then the four group winners play until we have a champion. In this tournament if you lose you go home. This year’s Final Four was Michigan State, Connecticut, Villanova, and North Carolina. Michigan State beat Connecticut in the semifinal and North Carolina beat Villanova in the other semifinal. In the finals, North Carolina decisively beat Michigan State, 89-72.

Highest Paid Sport Stars

By Emma S.

All of the wonderful sports we play for fun, some people play for money. Some of those people get paid big bucks and we have the top five highest paid athletes. Here they are!

1.) Tiger Woods, $111,941,827, Pro Golf
2.) Oscar De La Hoya, $55,000,000, Boxing
3.) Phil Mickelson, $51,256,505, Pro Golf
4.) Shaquille O’ Neal, $35,000,000, NBA
5.) Kobe Bryant, $33,718,750, NBA

Isn’t that a lot of $? This goes to show that these athletes have amazing skills and probably never gave up. If you try your hardest I bet you can make as much money as them! (When you make it to the pros of course!)

Polar Plunge

Four teachers from District 97 (John Gann, Sarah Clinton, Holly Saunders, and Susan Diehl) participated in the Polar Plunge an event to help raise money for the Special Olympics. Mr. Gann is an Adaptive P. E. teacher and Ms. Diehl is a Special Ed teacher at Holmes. The event raised almost $1000 for the Special Olympics. Special Olympics is a program where people with disabilities participate in competitions. The participating teachers jumped into the freezing, slushy lake. They reported that, “Yes it was cold.”
